It’s not everyday that a criminal defense attorney gets elected as a Superior Court Judge, let alone a Public Defender, but Linda Colfax did just that. With 55% of the vote, Linda Colfax won the race to become a new Superior Court Judge in San Francisco. I had the extreme pleasure of photographing her Investiture recently at the State Building in San Francisco.

In 2004, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom directed city officials to begin handing our marriage licenses to same-sex couples triggering a stampede of LGBT folks running to City Hall to get married. Unfortunately, those marriages were invalidated by the Courts shortly after, bringing much sorrow and heartache but also putting the discussion of LGBT rights and marriage into public debate. Lawsuits ensued on both sides: those who believe marriage is a right for all regardless of sexual orientation and those who believe marriage is only between a man and a woman. Enter 2008, California’s Superior Court overrules the lower court’s decision and marriage licenses are again issued from San Francisco City Hall.

So I’m incredibly honored to be a part of history in the making and was asked by San Francisco Deputy Public Defender Linda Colfax and her fiancé Kristin Lamoureux to document their marriage next to San Francisco City Hall’s rotunda. What’s more, not only did I document their wedding through photographs, I was also their legal witness! Truly an honor.

Linda and Kristin have been together for a long time and are raising two beautiful kids together. One of their dreams has always been to legally married and today, that dream was realized. With their two children, Linda Colfax and Kristin Lamoureux said their vows and officially became a married couple.
